Shot Fake Shooting Drill

Fake your defender to get a good shot

Developing a good shot fake is important for certain situations when you want to fool the defender so you can get open for a better shot.

C.J. McCollum shows you the basics of of a good shot fake and how to practice it.

Important points are:

  • Being in the “triple threat” position after you catch the ball so you can dribble, pass, or shoot (depending on what you need to do in the situation)
  • “Selling the shot” with the pump fake (eyes on the rim, upward motion with your arms and hands) so the defender thinks you are actually going up for the shot
  • Taking the dribble after the fake to get open for your shot after your defender gets off-balance
