Elbow And Go Shooting Drill

Develop your layups and bank shots close to the basket

This is a great drill for developing your shots close to the lane as well as practicing your layups on drives from the elbow.

It’s similar to Elbow Shooting Drill 2, but you are adding a few more dribbles and finishing with either a jump shot or a layup.

Here’s how to do it:

Start at one of the elbows.

Make a quick move to either the inside of the lane or to the outside of the lane.

Drive to the outside…

If you drive to the outside of the lane, dribble a few times so you can take a short range shot.  Try to mix in regular jump shots with bank shots since you are close to the basket.

The initial move you make before dribbling to get to your shooting spot could be a jab step, a pump fake, a pass fake, etc.

Drive to the inside…

If you drive to the inside of the lane, go all the way to the basket and finish with a strong layup.

Just make sure you are practicing with each hand on the layups.  For example, if you start on the right elbow and drive to the inside, finish with a strong layup on the left side of the rim with your left hand.

After each shot, grab the rebound, or grab the ball near the basket after your shot goes in, and then go to the other elbow to do the same thing.

Go slow at first to focus on getting your footwork and pump fake or shot fake mechanics correctly.

And make sure you finish strong with your layups.

As you progress, go at game speed, but maintain your good shooting form and rhythm.

Variations of this drill could be…

  • Challenge yourself to make a certain number of shots in a row
  • Spin the ball to yourself before you make your move
  • Do all bank shots on your drives to the outside of the lane
